Shedding Light: Testing and Changing Microwave Bulbs

⚠️ Safety Note: The High-Voltage Warning

Opening a microwave is dangerous. The capacitor can store a lethal charge long after the unit is unplugged. If the light bulb is the only thing you are touching, still ensure you are using insulated tools and avoid the capacitor area entirely. If you aren't comfortable, this is a job for a pro.

Usual warning do not remove cover when turn on and beware the capacitor when cover is removed itrs easy to locate the bulb here is mine replaced. There is usually 2 tabs holding bulb in bend these up and disconnect the terminal.

Easy job to do, just remove the outer cover , to test the light bulb just connect multimeter across the bulbs terminals and test for continuity. Some of these can be LED and driver circuits and tbh im not sure of results you would get from these with coninuity but if its not giving out light its likely the unit is faulty and needs replacing.

See video of testing a bulb and how easy to replace they are

A dark microwave doesn't mean it’s broken—it usually just means the bulb has reached the end of its life. While it's one of the easiest repairs you can do, it still requires opening the chassis, which demands strict adherence to safety protocols.

The Repair Process

  1. Safety Precautions: Unplug the microwave. As the cover must be removed, be extremely mindful of the high-voltage capacitor. Do not touch internal components unnecessarily.

  2. Accessing the Bulb: Remove the outer cover of the microwave. The bulb is typically located near the top or side, often held in place by two metal tabs.

  3. Testing for Faults: * For standard incandescent bulbs, use a multimeter to test for continuity across the terminals. No continuity means a blown filament.

    • For LED bulbs, continuity tests may be inconclusive due to the internal driver circuits. If the unit isn't emitting light but receiving power, replacement is the best path.

  4. Replacement: Bend back the retaining tabs, disconnect the terminals, and swap in a new bulb (Standard or LED).
