Just found a scrap microwave on the street so lets take to pieces and learn something if we can , never took one apart although i did study them at college for my Electrical engineering course but not in great detail and it has been a while.
Beware they have very large capacitor inside with high voltage and its enough to kill so make sure you discharge this prior to touching anything inside.
The cover comes off easy just 8-9 screws around the outside edges and we can now see what is inside.
Here is the incoming mains connections looks like
some input protection and filtering going on it
The capacitor is large and must be discharged prior to working on these machines the wires attached to cap are secondary transformer
wires and a diode ( high voltage )
In the centre the magnetron this creates the microwaves for cooking
some good videos on Youtube regards how they work.
Below this is the transformer and this can be tested easily
To left of this photo is the main control PCB board
and just behind the PCB are three micro switches which are triple safety devices for ensuring
door is shut prior to machine operating so you cannot accidently microwave yourself
and on top to the left the light bulb and centre the thermal cut out protecting unit from overheating
