Oven Troubleshooting Guide: 10 Common Faults and How to Fix Them

⚠️ SAFETY FIRST: IMPORTANT

Electricity can be lethal. Before attempting any repair, ensure the appliance is fully isolated from the mains power. If you are not confident using a multimeter or working with high-voltage components, consult a qualified engineer. Never work on a "live" circuit.

Cooker oven hob repair - common problems and troubleshooting

Is your oven acting up? Before you call out an expensive engineer, check this list. Many common cooker faults—like a dead oven or a door that won't close—can be fixed in minutes with basic tools. Here are the top problems I see every day.

The Quick Fault Finder

If you see this symptom...It's likely this faulty part...
Oven is totally deadCheck the timer/clock! It must be set to 'Manual'.
No heat, but fan is runningFaulty Fan Element (Test with multimeter).
Food burning / OverheatingFaulty Main Oven Thermostat.
Noisy / Vibrating OvenFan Motor bearings are worn or blade is loose.
Knobs meltingDamaged Door Seal (Heat is escaping).
Cutting out after 20 minsCooling Fan failure or faulty Thermal Cut-out.

Common cooker oven hob problems faults and fixes

Overheating and food burning - could be a symptom of a faulty thermostat

No heat - could be a sign the element is faulty but best to test the element just in case you have a faulty switch, thermostat or thermal cut outs.

No fan assist - probably a faulty fan motor test the coils of the motor and ensure fan it working ok if not replace.

Cooker oven hob knobs melting - could be sign your seal has gone around the oven door and this could need replacing.

Loud sound from oven - could be a failure in the electric fan check the fan and the fan blade out for signs if damage or being bent.

Oven light is out - change bulb the bulb has probably burned out

Oven cuts off after a period of time , it could be the overheat limit thermostats turning the elements off after a overheat condition.

The door does not close properly, this could be hinges or warping of the door or maybe the seal is damaged misshaped. If the door has fallen off then it is usually a result of hinges failing.

Oven heat is burning the unit it is fitted to, this could be the seal wearing it could be the door not closing correctly or poor installation and ventilation could also cause this issue, a thermostat failure could also cause the oven element to be on constantly

Oven cuts out while using, usually caused by overheating it could be a faulty thermostat may a thermal cut out operating to soon or a faulty cooling fan.

Oven cooker is noisy, usually caused by moving parts so on ovens cookers this is limited to the fan motor or blades so investigating here is  good ide , make sure fans is operating correctly ensure the mechanisms are clean and free of debris and ensure blade does not catch the sides of the oven when it spins. The fan will operate for  a short time after the oven is turned off, this is the cool down period so allow this to happen.

Oven cavity is dark , this is light bulb see our post of replacing your ovens light bulb. use the correct bulb as they are temperature tolerant.

Oven is totally dead, is the electricity supply ok, is the timer set sometimes the timer/Clock need to be set to allow power to cooker / oven these are basically main switches so check the timer clock is set as per instructions manual .

Oven is smoking, usually caused by spillage burning off while oven is hot. On a new cooker it could be the element burning off its protective coating.

Pro Tip: The "Hidden" Main Switch

I get hundreds of calls where the oven is "dead." 90% of the time, the power has flickered and reset the clock. Most electric ovens will NOT heat up unless the clock is set. Always try setting the time before you start taking panels off!

When to Call a Pro

While changing a bulb or a door seal is easy, if you suspect a major wiring fault or the oven is burning the kitchen cabinets, it's time to hire a pro. Safety is the priority (see my Safe Isolation Guide).
